[Re]Born Free

“The powers and principalities would hold less sway over our lives if we refused to collaborate with them. But refusal is risky, so we deny our own truth, take up lives of ‘self-impersonation’ and betray our identities.”
[Parker Palmer, author, educator, activist and Quaker]

Sometimes our lives get stuck. Old wounds, old sin, old patterns of behaviour rear up again. Maybe you thought you’d dealt with it – that addiction or attachment, that relationship, that ‘place’ you run to when you’re feeling worn down, discouraged, tired, bored, sad. Even when you’re running towards it, you know that place of ‘comfort’ is a broken cistern. You know that while its cover looks so very attractive, underneath, the water is tainted. It can’t bring life. Just defeat. Shame. And likely chaos, for you and for those around you. How good would it be to be free? Believer, you are. The moment you put your faith in Christ, Jesus the Breaker of Chains, set you free. This is truth: those wounds, that sin, those behaviours, have no hold on you if Jesus Christ is your Lord and Saviour. He is the Anointed One who came to set the captives free, which he did for all time through his death and resurrection.

So how come you’re back in that place? It’s not because that which once chained you still has a hold on you. It’s because you are holding on to it. You need to let go.

Don’t know how? Seek out a fellow believer you trust and tell them about your wound, your sin, your behaviour. If it’s someone close, someone who knows you, most likely they already know. People can always see—perhaps more so when we’re deceiving ourselves that we’ve got it covered. But in your telling, light can enter the darkness, and in that light you can begin to see the freedom that Christ has won for you; the freedom that in Christ is yours already. You. Are. Free. Believe it, live it.

The LORD sets prisoners free.
